Huntersville - Latta Plantation Nature Center and Preserve

6211 Sample Road

Latta Plantation Nature Preserve is the County's largest nature preserve and protects over 1,343 acres of natural communities including the Beatties Ford Basic Forest natural heritage site. The preserve forms a green peninsula extending into Mountain Island Lake, the drinking water source for over 700,000 residents in Mecklenburg and Gaston counties. Its diversity of natural communities includes upland and bottom land hardwood forests, open fields, streams, and a Piedmont Prairie restoration site protecting the federally endangered Schweinitz's sunflower and Michaux's sumac. The Preserve is part of the Mountain Island Lake Important Bird Area, designated by the National Audubon Society due to its diversity of wintering waterfowl, breeding and migratory songbird species, and protection of bottom land hardwood forests, a threatened natural community in North Carolina.

Just went here for the first time ever. My husband and I definitely enjoyed it. The park ranger was so funny and entertaining. He helped us pick out a good trail to take. We ended up walking a little over 5 Miles. It was very relaxing, not many people on the trail. Definitely a great place to hike. Will be going back.

Exceptional place to spend an afternoon - Lace up the hikers, fill up the water bottle, and just open your eyes. We have seen so much out here - time and time again. Wildlife is endless. If you do a little planning, and think its possible, you can easy put in 10 miles on the trails here! (Maybe a horse ride is your thing - that's an option too!)

I FREAKING LOVE THIS PLACE! I took my daughter out fishing before it got cold. She had a ball in the water at the banks. THEY HAVE SO MUCH YOU CAN DO! Fish, Hike, Canoe, Horseback Riding, picnics. I LOVE THE RAPTOR! There's just so much to do here I can't even list it all! YOU JUST HAVE TO CHECK IT OUT FOR YOURSELF!

Our favorite place to take our pup on a hike! This is the best place to hike regardless of the seasons, but summers are my favorite! There's a lot of tree cover so you aren't baking in the sun, but then it's the perfect temperature to get in the water with the doggy. Latta has something to offer for everyone. If you like mountainous terrain, flat terrain, trail running, walking on paved paths, riding your horse, walking with kids, walking while pregnant, walking along the water, walking through the woods... the list goes on. It's equally beautiful in the fall as it is in spring or summer. They have lots of parking available and picnic benches. During the warmer months you can also rent canoes to go boating in the lake. Just an all-round great place for people of all ages to get out and spend time in nature.
