Hirundo Wildlife Refuge (HWR) is a 2,400-acre preserve including a bog, floodplain forest, mixed and evergreen forests. It is open year-round 24/7 from sunrise to sunset. A 7 mile network of hiking trails is available for hiking, snowshoeing and skiing. Canoes are available for interested parties to borrow to explore the 10-mile canoe trail network. HWR also provides guided walks and guided canoe trips for a fee.

HWR is conveniently located - only 15 minutes (8.5 miles) from the center of Old Town.

The Refuge has been an important part of Old Town and its surrounding communities since 1965, providing many educational, recreational and communal project opportunities.  In 2015, we celebrated the 50-year anniversary of its founding by Oliver Larouche.

Hirundo Wildlife Refuge is a not-for profit organization, donations are welcome.
